Maritime Crew Visas
On 1 July 2007 Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) introduced the Maritime Crew Visa (MCV) for crew of non-military ships.
Since 1 July 2007, crew of non-military ships have to make an application for an MCV. Those crew that are granted a MCV must have a valid passport when they arrive on a ship in Australia and be able to provide evidence of employment on the ship.
Applications (both internet-based and paper) for a MCV are available from the DIAC website. MCV applications are processed by a DIAC office in Brisbane, Australia and there are no costs for this visa service. This visa may NOT be requested at DIAC offices outside of Australia.
It is important to note that the MCV is not valid for travel to Australia by air. Crew of non-military ships wishing to fly to Australia to join their ship will have to obtain an entry visa, and an MCV.
Additional information is available from the DIAC website at www.immi.gov.au/sea.
