Kiripuranji: Contemporary Art from the Tiwi Islands
The Australian Embassy in Athens and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with the kind assistance of the Cultural Organisation of the City of Athens and the Athinais Cultural Centre, presented for the first time in Athens an exhibition on Australian indigenous art “Kiripuranji: Contemporary Art from the Tiwi Islands ”. The exhibition was held at the ATHINAIS Cultural Centre from 21 September to 16 October 2005. Entrance to the public was free.
Kiripuranji (a Tiwi word meaning ‘clever with our hands') was the first opportunity for Greek audiences to view a wide range of internationally renowed Tiwi art, including canvasses, works on paper, ceremonial spears, bark baskets and vibrant textiles. The works were distinctive representations of the 40,000 year-old Australian indigenous culture.
Kiripuranji provided an insight into the culture of the Tiwi people, which is founded on their stories of the creation period. The Kiripuranji exhibition showed the inextricable link between life on the islands today and the ancient cultural traditions which make the Tiwi people and their art unique.
