“Rebuilding Afghanistan:
An International Partnership”

23-30 June 2008
Syntagma Metro Station

The Australian Embassy in Greece, in cooperation with the Canadian Embassy and Hellenic Aid, hosted the compelling photographic exhibition Rebuilding Afghanistan: An International Partnership, which was held from 23-30 June 2008 at the Syntagma Metro Station. The photographic exhibition illustrated clearly why Australia, alongside its international partners, is committed to helping the people of Afghanistan. The exhibition was opened on 23 June 2008 at 18.30hrs.

Australia is the largest non-NATO contributor to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and a major aid donor. Approximately 1,000 Australian Defence Personnel are serving in Afghanistan including as part of the Netherlands-led Provincial Reconstruction Team in Oruzgan Province in southern Afghanistan.

Australia is making a substantial contribution to international efforts to stabilise Afghanistan. Australia's presence, which is at the request of the Government of Afghanistan, is helping the Afghans create a stable, democratic country that can provide for its citizens by addressing the security, governance, economic and social challenges they face.

Australia also works with the Afghan Government and its international partners to find practical, long-term solutions to the narcotics problem in Afghanistan.

This exhibition sought to show that long term commitment to Afghanistan requires a heavy emphasis on reconstruction and development. That effort can only take place when security and certainty are provided.
