Kiripuranji: an Exhibition of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art from the Tiwi Islands for the first time in Athens
21 September 2005
The Australian Embassy in Athens in cooperation with the Cultural Organisation of the City of Athens present at the Athinais Cultural Centre, the Kiripuranji exhibition of contemporary Australian indigenous art from the Tiwi Islands. The exhibition will be hosted at the Athinais Cultural Centre, Kastorias 34-36 Votanikos from 21 September to 16 October 2005. Entrance is free to the public from 9.00am to 11.00pm.
Sponsors (Communications): Mega Channel, Antenna Radio
Sponsor: Cellier
Kiripuranji (a Tiwi word meaning ‘clever with our hands’) will be the first opportunity for Greek audiences to view a wide range of internationally renowed Tiwi art including canvasses, works on paper, ceremonial spears, bark baskets and vibrant textiles. The works are distinctive representations of the 40,000 year-old Australian indigenous culture.
Kiripuranji provides an insight into the culture of the Tiwi people, which is founded on their stories of the creation period. The Kiripuranji exhibition shows the inextricable link between life on the islands today and the ancient cultural traditions which make the Tiwi people and their art unique. To the Tiwi, contemporary culture does not exclude traditional culture. As is the case for most Indigenous Australians, the land and the past are united in a complex relationship, with the past a living force pertinent to their existence today and ensuring their cultural survival into the future.
The opening of the Kiripuranji exhibition will take place on Wednesday, 21 September 2005 at 19.00hrs at the Athinais Cultural Centre, Kastorias 34 -36 Votanikos.
